The bachelor of arts (B.A.) program in theater arts is designed for those students seeking a liberal arts education coupled with a solid fundamental overview of theater. The program provides a high-quality, general perspective of theater encompassing academic study, production practice, and appropriate internships. Several opportunities exist for students to study abroad in university-sponsored programs.

B.A. students enjoy several performing/production outlets with extracurricular theater organizations on campus: the Cabaret Theater, the College Avenue Players, Hillel Theater, and the Livingston Theater Company. See the bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) information for more information on the B.F.A. program offered by the Mason Gross School of the Arts. Students who wish to specialize in acting, design, or production should consider auditioning or interviewing to be a B.F.A. student. Please note that casting and directing opportunities in departmental Rutgers Theater Company and Jameson Project productions are limited to B.F.A. and master of fine arts (M.F.A.) students.

The mission of the theater program at Rutgers-Camden is to develop the skills, craft, and imagination of its students, as well as to provide them with a strong understanding of the history of the theater within a liberal arts context. In addition, the theater program stresses the collaborative nature of the art form by emphasizing the creative process and new play development. As a theater program operating within a larger fine arts department, we offer students a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary work. The curriculum includes courses in the areas of acting, directing, playwriting, technical theater, and dramatic literature/theater history. The program sees theater studies as a whole--an entire package with no one aspect being more important than another. The student who successfully completes the prescribed course of study will be prepared for graduate school or a variety of career options.

    Course Content

At Rutgers we will train your mind and body towards the goal of becoming a theater professional. Whether you are training to be an actor, director, playwright, designer, stage manager or theater technician, you will mostly practice your individual disciplines. We refer to these types of activity as your Core Training. As an actor the emphasis will be on speech and movement along side Meisner, Chekhov techniques and Classical training. If you are studying design you will be taught essential drafting, construction, draping, and presentation skills. As a playwright you will develop your plays through stage readings, workshops and formal presentations that will help you develop your voice. All of these core training classes will help you to develop techniques in your chosen craft and then practice them in any of Rutgers’ state of the art theater spaces. Our many production opportunities will give you the experience of creating your first stage work. This activity is a combination of fully designed productions as well as more modest student generated projects such as site specific performance and cabaret.
As a company you will also share in a Core Curriculum. This term refers to the courses designed to reinforce or challenge your assumptions about theater and expand your thinking. Some examples of these courses are: Global Theater, the Aesthetics of Space, Clothing and Culture, Theater History, and the 20th Century Avant-Garde. Although highly demanding, these are not typical academic courses. They have a direct and important relationship to your Core Training and to the work we put on our stage.

    USA requirements for international students

Each university in the Unites States of America sets its own admission standards so there isn't the same criteria for all the students and the university can decide which applicants meet those standards. The fee for each application is between $35 to $100.

After the selections of the universities you want to attend, the best of all would be to contact each university for an application form and more admission information for the international students. Moreover, for a graduate or postgraduate program it's necessary to verify the admission requirements. Some programs require that you send your application directly to their department.

Admissions decisions are based on students's academic record and different test scores, such as TOEFL, the SAT or ACT (for undergraduate programs) and GRE or GMAT (for graduate programs). Admission decision is based on your academic results and motivation.
