    Description

Geographers study human activities either in one location or in a regional or global context. The geographic method of inquiry is not distinguished by particular objects or institutions, but by the way a geographer asks questions about the location of multiple phenomena and the interconnections among spatial distributions.

For example, if a geographer is curious about variations in the incidence of rural and urban poverty, it will be necessary to examine the patterns of social, economic, cultural and physical factors to develop an acceptable
explanation of the observed differences from place to place.

Geographers view the world as a complex mosaic of interconnected people, things and activities. This complex mosaic is expressed as the great variety of places and landscapes we see around us every day.

    Careers

Career opportunities in geography are diverse, and employment prospects after graduation are excellent. Employment opportunities vary from positions in business and government to jobs in planning and education. Others choose to use their knowledge and energies in programs such as the Peace Corps. Because of the breadth of the discipline, many students choose to specialize in a subfield such as community studies, natural resources and environmental sciences, GIS and spatial analysis or geographic education, whereas others may select a specific region of the world such as Latin America or Africa as a focal point for their studies.

Career opportunities in business and local governments are numerous. They include:

    • Demographer
    • Market researcher
    • Cultural resource specialist
    • GIS manager
    • Cartographer
    • Sales projector
    • Ecologist
    • Location analyst and consultant

    Course Content

Students of geography may pursue a traditional major in geography, a geography minor, or choose the geography-pre-planning option. The bachelor of science or the bachelor of arts degree may be earned.
Although the major requirements for the BA or BS degrees are the same, college requirements differ as described earlier in the College of Arts and Sciences section.
Students may pursue a general program in geography or choose to develop a concentration in either environmental studies or community studies. Other concentrations may be developed to reflect the particular interests of a student. For example, a student may earn a teaching licensure while working toward a degree in geography.
Another curriculum leads to the bachelor of science degree in secondary education: Earth and Space Science (EDESC); Social Studies (EDSST) Teacher Liensure Programs; or Second Teaching Field in Secondary Education is available to students who have successfully completed an approved full licensure program in another teaching area. These optional programs give individuals the opportunity to teach in more than one area.
Requirements for a major in geography:
    • World Regional Geography
    • Human Geography
    • Introductory Physical Geography
    • Cartography and Thematic Mapping
    • Capstone Seminar in Geography
    • Geographic Information Systems I

    USA requirements for international students

Each university in the Unites States of America sets its own admission standards so there isn't the same criteria for all the students and the university can decide which applicants meet those standards. The fee for each application is between $35 to $100.

After the selections of the universities you want to attend, the best of all would be to contact each university for an application form and more admission information for the international students. Moreover, for a graduate or postgraduate program it's necessary to verify the admission requirements. Some programs require that you send your application directly to their department.

Admissions decisions are based on students's academic record and different test scores, such as TOEFL, the SAT or ACT (for undergraduate programs) and GRE or GMAT (for graduate programs). Admission decision is based on your academic results and motivation.
