    The Master of Science in Physics (Applied and Engineering Physics) at Technical University Munich (TUM) is a two-year, high-level, international graduate programme offered by the Physics Department. The programme is designed to give students insights into current trends and new developments in modern physics, profiting from the cutting-edge research carried out at the Physics Department, which covers a very broad spectrum: particle detectors, science of light, nanosciences, soft matter science, applied solid state physics, medical engineering and energy sciences.
    The programme includes courses in advanced theoretical physics as well as specialised topics in modern physics. In addition, there are elective courses from the fields of informatics, chemistry, and electrical or mechanical engineering. The curriculum reflects the strategic location of the Physics Department, embedded in TUM Campus Garching and closely connected with several Max Planck Institutes and other important research centres in the area. The first two semesters are dedicated to advanced and specialised lectures, lab courses, and seminars. During the second year, students have to complete a Master's thesis within a group in the Physics Department or at adjunct institutes.
    The programme is taught in English. Having successfully completed the programme, students will be awarded the "Master of Science" degree in Physics (Applied and Engineering Physics) from TUM.

    Educational organisation

    The Master's programme is divided in two parts: a first year of advanced studies and a second year of research.

    Advanced studies (first year, two semesters):
    • Advanced theoretical physics course (offered only during the winter semester)
    • Six special courses
    • Advanced lab courses
    • One soft skills course
    • One student seminar
    • Elective, non-physics courses from the fields of mathematics, informatics, chemistry, and engineering

    Research phase (second year, two semesters):
    • Master's seminar (literature research and specialisation)
    • Master's training (methodology and project planning)
    • Master's thesis
    • Master's colloquium (defence of the Master's thesis)

    From the beginning of their studies, every student is supervised by a mentor who helps them to find the focus of their studies and to compose an individual plan of studies. Moreover, they also receive support from the academic counsellors for the Master's programmes (

    Students have the choice of participating in one of our exchange programmes (e.g. ERASMUS, TUMexchange) or in one of our specialised bilateral agreements (1:1 Master's programme in Physics and Nanotechnology with Technical University of Denmark, double degree Master's programme with Keio University, Japan, double degree Master's programme with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden).

    Course objectives

    This programme aims to provide students with a firm basis in modern physics, supplemented by a first-hand insight into current trends and latest developments.
    Graduates have excellent job opportunities in research and technological development. Some technology-oriented examples of related working fields are:
    • Energy science takes into account the enormous public interest in energy problems arising from the fact that the future of the national and worldwide economy depends on the availability of sufficient primary energy
    • Materials science is the key to the development of new technologies in fast-changing fields such as medicine, communication or transportation


    Language requirements

    If your native language is not English, you are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and enclose a certified copy of the results with your application. A minimum score of 88 for the TOEFL iBT is required, corresponding to IELTS 6.5, Cambridge ESOL CAE certificate.

    Academic requirements

    Bachelor's degree in Physics (or equivalent)
    In order to figure out whether your Bachelor's studies are sufficient for admission to our Master's programme, please find relevant information about the application and the prerequisites on our website One ECTS accounts for 30 hours of work within and outside the classroom; a conversion will depend on how credits are defined in your university. Please be aware that special attention is paid to the theoretical physics courses, condensed matter physics as well as to nuclear and particle physics. In our experience, engineering studies typically do not suffice for admission.
    For your convenience, in order to avoid misunderstandings given the different structures of study programmes around the world, we recommend that you attach to your application a description of the contents of the physics subjects you have taken at your university.

    Enrolment fees

    Approx. 115 EUR per semester, the fee includes a semester ticket covering public transport in Munich.

    Costs of living

    In order to cover personal expenses while studying in Munich, we recommend a budget of at least 800 EUR per month.

    Job opportunities

    A limited number of student work positions (earning around 400 EUR per month) are available. Please contact the research groups directly to find out about these opportunities as these positions are not centrally managed.

    Funding opportunities within the university

    Scholarships for international students at TUM: the university has a scholarship programme for excellent international students with low income. Recipients receive a one-time study aid of 500 to 1,500 EUR per semester. Students may apply starting from the second semester of studies.

We are here to help you with issues such as applications, enrolment, student cards etc. Furthermore, we offer various three- to six-week summer schools combining academics with a rich menu of educational and social activities as a foretaste of university life. For international students who have been admitted to a degree programme, the Student Service Center offers a four-week pre-study course designed to help you get started at the TUM. Students new to TUM are invited to the service fair "Fit for TUM" which takes place before the semester officially starts, to get an overview of the various offerings of support services at TUM.
    Learning German: While the language of instruction for many of TUM's postgraduate programmes is English, learning German and thus being able to participate in daily German life at a deeper level enriches the experience of studying and living in Munich.     Services and support for international students

    International Café: this is a project jointly organised by the Faculties of Informatics and Physics at Campus Garching. Once a month we meet to learn about and discuss different topics in a cosy atmosphere. The International Café is open to all TUM students: whether you permanent residents in Germany, just coming for an exchange programme or international full-time students.
    TUM's International Center offers a special programme tailored for international students, TUMinternational (TUMi). The TUMi programme provides help and advice for new students as well as a cultural programme with events scheduled both prior to and during the academic periods.
