    You will discover basic concepts in marine science on this programme, along with an understanding and application of resource management issues.

    Graduate students from a variety of science and engineering backgrounds are introduced to basic concepts in marine science which are then augmented by an understanding and application of resource management issues.

    The programme is taught by staff from across NOCS who draw on their cutting edge research to create a challenging and stimulating degree programme. You will also be encouraged to attend our research seminars, some delivered by leading visiting scientists.

    Career opportunities
    * A wide choice of careers in both government-funded and private sectors, in the UK and overseas.

    * Potential career opportunities include positions with government laboratories and agencies, as well as with nature conservation bodies and commercial consultancies.

    The structure shown below is for full-time students. Delivery for part-time students is agreed on an individual basis.

    Year 1
    Modules taken are dependent on your background knowledge. Students with no prior oceanographic knowledge take four introductory modules. Those with a strong 'oceanographic' background take two introductory modules and two optional modules. Students will also be working on a research project through the year.

    Semester One
    You will take two compulsory modules, which for all students will include CENV6087 Environment audit and risk assessment. In addition to the options listed below, ENVS6019 Contemporary global environment issues can be selected, subject to timetabling contraints.

    Compulsory:

    * SOES6001 Contemporary topics
    * SOES6039 MSc research project

    Optional:

    * SOES6013 Introduction to Biological Oceanography
    * SOES6014 Introduction to physical oceanography
    * SOES6015 Introduction to chemical oceanography
    * SOES6016 Introduction to marine geology
    * SOES3014 Coastal sediment dynamics
    * SOES6004 Applied and marine geophysics
    * SOES6005 Large scale ocean processes
    * SOES6007 Biogeochemical cycles in the Earth system
    * SOES6008 Deep sea ecology
    * SOES6009 Zooplankton ecology and processes
    * SOES6017 Introductory remote sensing of the ocean
    * SOES6056 International Maritime and Environmental Law

    Semester Two
    In Semester 2, all modules are short intensive courses delivered over a three week period. Depending on your background and interests, you will take three modules from those listed.

    Compulsory:

    * SOES6039 MSc research project

    Optional:

    * SOES6011 Applied coastal sediment dynamics
    * SOES6023 Environmental radioactivity and radiochemistry
    * SOES6027 Global ocean monitoring
    * SOES6020 Structure and dynamics of marine communities
    * SOES6036 Applied biogeochemistry and pollution
    * SOES6057 UN convention on the law of the seas

    Please note: This specification provides a concise summary of the main features of the programme and the learning outcomes that a typical student might reasonably be expected to achieve and demonstrate if s/he takes full advantage of the learning opportunities that are provided. More detailed information can be found in the programme handbook (or other appropriate guide).

    UK requirements for international applications

    Universities in the United Kingdom use a centralized system of undergraduate application: University and College Admissions Service (UCAS). It is used by both domestic and international students. Students have to register on the UCAS website before applying to the university. They will find all the necessary information about the application process on this website. Some graduate courses also require registration on this website, but in most cases students have to apply directly to the university. Some universities also accept undergraduate application through Common App (the information about it could be found on universities' websites).

    Both undergraduate and graduate students may receive three types of responses from the university. The first one, “unconditional offer” means that you already reached all requirements and may be admitted to the university. The second one, “conditional offer” makes your admission possible if you fulfill some criteria – for example, have good grades on final exams. The third one, “unsuccessful application” means that you, unfortunately, could not be admitted to the university of you choice.

    All universities require personal statement, which should include the reasons to study in the UK and the information about personal and professional goals of the student and a transcript, which includes grades received in high school or in the previous university.

    You will need a good (2:1 or equivalent) Honours degree in chemical, biological, physical, Earth and environmental sciences, engineering, oceanography or mathematics. A solid background in mathematics at undergraduate level and familiarity with computers will also be required. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 TOEFL paper-based test score : 580 TOEFL iBT® test: 92 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. The IELTS test is most widely accepted by universities and is also accepted for Tier 4 visas to the UK- learn more.
